COLLEGE STATION, Texas – According to the Texas Department of State and Health Services, there have been 237 cases of Zika in the state and three cases in Brazos County.
But a new app developed by professors at Texas A&M strives to keep that number from growing.
The app, launched last week, is called TAMU Zika and is available for both iPhones and the Android market.
The app shows you how the virus is spread, where it is found and how you can help prevent yourself from catching it.
It also has a survey feature that lets users answer a series of questions about mosquito breeding grounds in their area.
"They can submit their data, and we'll map it, and that data can be available to local health authorities who'd like to mitigate those areas," said Jennifer Horney with the Texas A&M School of Public Health. "We've also presented this data through the Health Science Center leadership to CDC. "
Users must be 18 to use the app, which was a joint effort between computer science, public health and geography experts.
